What are Menopause and Perimenopause?
Menopause is the transitional process a woman’s body goes through when her monthly period stops – for good. Literally meaning ‘end of monthly cycles,’ the early stages of menopause are called ‘perimenopause’.
All women are destined to go through this transition. Yet the number and severity of symptoms presenting themselves in women going through menopause differs widely between individuals.
Menopause certainly doesn’t happen overnight. A gradual process, it can last anywhere from two to ten years.
Eight out of ten women experience one or more of a wide range of symptoms associated with menopause. Among the more troublesome symptoms are so-called ‘hot flashes’ and night sweats. Other symptoms include weight gain, irregular periods, sleep difficulties, thinning of hair, vagina dryness and low libido among others.
